Alfred Music's Africa: Your Passport to a New World of Music - A Comprehensive Review

Introduction: Exploring the Sounds of Africa for Guitarists

For guitarists seeking to expand their musical horizons and delve into the rich tapestry of African musical traditions, Alfred Music's Africa: Your Passport to a New World of Music offers a unique learning experience. This book and audio CD combination provides a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, introducing various African musical styles and techniques for guitarists of intermediate skill levels. The package aims to bridge the gap between Western musical training and the vibrant rhythms and melodies of Africa, opening up a whole new world of musical exploration.

The resource is designed to be accessible to guitarists who already possess a foundational understanding of music theory and basic guitar techniques. While it introduces new concepts, it avoids overwhelming learners with excessively complex material. The inclusion of an audio CD enhances the learning process significantly, providing accurate demonstrations of the various musical styles and techniques presented in the book.

Key Features

  • Comprehensive Overview of African Musical Styles: The book delves into a variety of traditional and contemporary African musical styles, including highlife, soukous, and Afrobeat. It offers an in-depth look at the rhythmic patterns and melodic structures characteristic of these genres.
  • Detailed Tablature and Notation: Each piece is meticulously transcribed in both standard musical notation and guitar tablature, accommodating players with different reading preferences. This dual presentation enhances accessibility for a wider range of learners.
  • Audio CD with Demonstrations: The accompanying audio CD features professionally recorded tracks showcasing all the pieces presented in the book. This feature allows for accurate learning and aids in developing musical timing and phrasing.
  • Cultural Context and Background Information: The book doesn't just focus on the technical aspects; it also provides valuable cultural context and background information on the origins and evolution of the various African musical styles. This helps enrich the learning experience.
  • Progressive Difficulty Level: The musical pieces are arranged in a progressive order of difficulty, allowing for a gradual increase in complexity as the learner progresses.

Pros

  • Excellent Instructional Material: The book's clear explanations, detailed tablature, and high-quality audio CD make it an excellent resource for learning African guitar styles. The combination of text and audio makes it significantly easier to grasp complex rhythms and melodies.
  • Diverse Range of Musical Styles: The inclusion of various African musical genres provides learners with a broad exposure to the richness and diversity of African music. It avoids focusing solely on one specific style.
  • Cultural Enrichment: The cultural context provided alongside the musical instruction is a unique and valuable feature, fostering a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance of the music.

Cons

  • Intermediate Skill Level Required: The book assumes a certain level of prior guitar experience. Beginners might find some aspects challenging without a basic understanding of music theory and guitar technique.
  • Limited Focus on Improvisation: While the book teaches specific pieces, it lacks a comprehensive approach to improvisation within the context of African musical styles. This limitation restricts its potential for fostering creative expression.

Who Should Buy?

This book and CD set is ideal for intermediate-level guitarists who are interested in expanding their musical horizons beyond Western traditions. It's particularly suitable for those seeking to explore the unique sounds and techniques of African music. Individuals with an interest in world music, ethnomusicology, or simply those wanting a fresh perspective on guitar playing will find this resource valuable. The combination of detailed instruction, accurate audio examples, and cultural insights sets it apart from more basic guitar instruction books.

The book's progressive approach makes it suitable for self-learning or as a supplement to traditional guitar instruction. Guitarists who enjoy learning from both tablature and standard notation will also find the dual presentation convenient and helpful. Those seeking a strictly methodical approach to soloing or improvisation may want to supplement this with other resources.

Conclusion: A Valuable Addition to Any Guitarist's Library

At $17.99, Africa: Your Passport to a New World of Music offers excellent value for money. While it may not be suitable for complete beginners, intermediate and advanced guitarists seeking to delve into African musical styles will find it a rich and rewarding learning experience. My husband and I both got these for a trip and they worked perfectly. They are lightweight and the battery didn't die once during our 10 day vacation. Much better than those disposable battery ones you find at the drugstore.

Good stuff for the price. I used it on my car seat bolsters that were starting to peel and look gray. The match isn't 100% perfect but you really have to look close to notice. Much cheaper than taking it to a pro shop tbh.

I've tried a lot of these trail cams and the Assark is definitely one of the faster ones out there. The 48MP claim might be a bit of marketing fluff but the daytime shots are super clear and the trigger speed is legit. Only thing is the setup was a bit of a pain and the instructions are kinda trash, but once it's up and running it's solid. Way better than my old Bushnell that kept dying on me.

Messy. I followed the instructions but it still left streaks on my boots. Plus it smells really strong, had to leave them in the garage for three days. I think I'll stick to professional shops from now on.

Waste of money for anyone on a real jobsite. Burnt through the teeth on the 7/8" bit in less than a week just cutting through standard junction boxes. The "easy eject" feature is a gimmick if the blade can't even finish the hole, so I'm returning these and going back to my old brand.

Best purchase I've made for my hotel coffee setup this year. No more messy spills or trying to find a trash can for wet grounds, just clean, easy espresso every single time.

Decent set of F clamps. The 12-inch size is versatile for most of my cabinet work. Shipping was fast and they were packaged well.
