Carry-on 88 Key Folding Piano Review: The Ultimate Travel Companion for Pianists?

Are you a pianist who loves to travel but hates being without your instrument? Or perhaps you're a beginner looking for a space-saving keyboard to learn on? The Carry-on 88 Key Folding Piano promises a full-sized playing experience in an ultra-portable package. This folding piano aims to bridge the gap between portability and playability, offering a convenient solution for practice, performance, and music creation on the go. For musicians constantly moving, the ability to carry a full-sized keyboard in a backpack is revolutionary. Let's dive into this review and see if the Carry-on lives up to the hype.

This innovative instrument folds down to a fraction of its full size, making it ideal for travel, small apartments, or anyone who values portability. With 128 voices, USB MIDI connectivity, and a built-in speaker, the Carry-on folding piano has many features packed into a small footprint. But does it sacrifice playability in the name of convenience? Our review will explore the pros and cons of this folding piano to help you decide if it's the right fit for your needs. We'll compare it to other portable options and delve into the details that matter to musicians.

Key Features and Specifications

Here are the key features and specifications of the Carry-on 88 Key Folding Piano:

  • 88 Full-Size Keys: Offers a complete piano playing range, crucial for serious practice and performance.
  • Folding Design: Folds in half for easy storage and transportation. Making it significantly smaller when folded.
  • 128 Voices: A wide selection of instrument sounds, including pianos, organs, strings, and more, allowing for diverse musical expression.
  • USB MIDI Connectivity: Connects to computers and other devices for recording, composing, and using with music software. This allows for seamless integration into your digital music workflow.
  • Built-in Speaker: Enables playing without external amplification, perfect for impromptu practice sessions. The speaker offers decent volume but consider using headphones for better sound quality.
  • Rechargeable Battery: Offers hours of playing time on a single charge, providing freedom from power outlets.
  • Dimensions (Unfolded): Approximately 53 inches (length) x 8 inches (width)
  • Dimensions (Folded): Approximately 26.5 inches (length) x 8 inches (width)
  • Weight: Approximately 5.5 lbs
  • Included: USB cable, sustain pedal, carrying bag.

Pros: What We Liked

  • Ultra-Portability: The folding design is the biggest selling point, making it incredibly easy to transport and store. Its lightweight construction adds to its portability, making it a true travel companion.
  • Full-Sized Keys: Unlike many mini-keyboards, the Carry-on boasts 88 full-sized keys, offering a realistic playing experience for trained pianists.
  • Versatile Sound Options: The 128 voices provide a wide range of instrumental sounds, allowing you to experiment with different musical styles. This adds to its versatility, making it suitable for various genres.

Cons: What Could Be Better

  • Key Action: The key action is not weighted and can feel somewhat spongy, which may not appeal to experienced pianists used to acoustic instruments. It may take some getting used to, especially for players accustomed to the resistance of a traditional piano.
  • Sound Quality: While the built-in speaker is convenient, the sound quality is not exceptional. Using headphones or an external amplifier is recommended for optimal sound fidelity. The built-in speaker is adequate for practice but lacks the richness and depth of a dedicated sound system.

Who Should Buy the Carry-on 88 Key Folding Piano?

The Carry-on 88 Key Folding Piano is an excellent choice for musicians who prioritize portability and convenience. It's perfect for:

  • Traveling Musicians: If you're constantly on the road and need a practice keyboard that you can easily pack in your luggage, this folding piano is a game-changer.
  • Beginners: The full-sized keys and affordable price make it a great starter keyboard for learning piano, especially if you have limited space.
  • Apartment Dwellers: If you live in a small apartment and don't have room for a full-sized piano, this folding piano provides a space-saving solution without compromising on the number of keys.
This keyboard may also appeal to songwriters looking for a compact option to take anywhere to write new songs. Music teachers who travel to students' homes could also find this a viable option. While professional performing musicians may still prefer the feel of a quality weighted keyboard, for many other use cases the carry-on provides an acceptable compromise.

Compared to other portable keyboards like the Yamaha P-125 or Casio Privia PX-S1100, the Carry-on prioritizes portability over sound quality and key action. While those models offer more realistic piano experiences, they are significantly larger and heavier. The Alesis Recital Pro is another option in a similar price range, but it's not foldable. Consider your priorities: if portability is paramount, the Carry-on is a clear winner.

Conclusion: Price/Performance and Overall Recommendation

At $99.99, the Carry-on 88 Key Folding Piano offers a compelling blend of portability, full-sized keys, and affordability. While the key action and sound quality aren't on par with more expensive keyboards, the convenience of its folding design makes it a worthwhile investment for traveling musicians and beginners with limited space. If you value portability above all else, the Carry-on folding piano is a solid option.

Good value for money. It does exactly what it says on the bottle by smoothing out the texture of the face. My wife uses it too and she says it's better than the Smashbox one she used to buy.

Way too expensive for what it is. The "gold" coating didn't seem to do anything special and I found it actually tore easier than the cheaper red paper I usually buy. Save your money and get something else, this is just fancy marketing.

Very classy piece. The metal is sturdy and the balance actually works, which I wasn't expecting for the price point.

Not impressed tbh. The zipper got stuck on the second trip and for this much money I expected better quality control. Also its smaller than it looks in the pictures. Returning it and getting something more practical.
