Creality Ender 3 Extruder Upgrade Review: A Metal Drive Feeder for Enhanced 3D Printing

Introduction: Upgrading Your 3D Printing Experience

For owners of Creality Ender 3, Ender 3 Pro, Ender 3 S1, Ender 3 V2, Ender 3 Max, and CR-10 series 3D printers, upgrading components can significantly improve print quality and reliability. This review focuses on the Creality Official Ender 3 Extruder Upgrade Metal Drive Feeder, a gray aluminum extruder designed for 1.75mm filament. This affordable upgrade promises smoother filament feeding, reducing issues like jams and inconsistencies that plague many budget-friendly 3D printers. Whether you're a seasoned 3D printing enthusiast or a beginner looking to enhance your printer's performance, this review will help you decide if this upgrade is right for you. This extruder upgrade is a particularly attractive option for those seeking a simple, cost-effective way to improve their prints without investing in a completely new extruder system.

This affordable upgrade is a worthwhile investment for those experiencing common filament feeding problems. The metal construction promises durability and improved grip on the filament, addressing a frequent source of frustration for many 3D printer users. The upgrade process is relatively straightforward, even for beginners, making it accessible for a wide range of users.

Key Features:

  • Material: Durable gray aluminum construction for increased strength and heat dissipation.
  • Filament Compatibility: Designed for 1.75mm filament, compatible with various materials (PLA, ABS, PETG, etc.).
  • Easy Installation: Designed for seamless integration with Creality Ender 3 and compatible printers. Installation instructions are typically included.
  • Improved Grip: Enhanced filament grip reduces slipping and jamming, leading to more consistent extrusion.
  • Enhanced Performance: Aims to improve print quality, reduce layer adhesion issues and increase the overall reliability of your 3D printer.

Pros:

  • Improved Filament Feeding: The metal extruder significantly improves filament grip, drastically reducing the chances of jams and inconsistent extrusion. This results in smoother, more consistent prints, especially with more challenging filaments like PETG.
  • Durable Construction: The aluminum construction is far more robust than the stock plastic extruder, offering enhanced longevity and resistance to wear and tear. This translates to a more reliable printing experience over the long term.
  • Easy Installation: The upgrade process is relatively straightforward, requiring minimal technical expertise. Most users should be able to install it within minutes, following the provided instructions.
  • Affordable Price Point: The extruder's low price makes it an accessible upgrade for users on a budget, providing significant performance improvements for a minimal investment.
  • Compatibility: This extruder is widely compatible with various Creality 3D printers, offering a versatile solution for a range of users.

Cons:

  • Potential for Noise Increase: Some users have reported a slight increase in noise compared to the stock plastic extruder. This is likely due to the metal-on-metal contact.
  • Limited Adjustability: While the upgrade improves feeding, it might not address all extruder-related issues. Significant adjustments to the printer's settings might still be necessary depending on your filament and printing style.

Who Should Buy?

This Creality Ender 3 extruder upgrade is ideal for 3D printer owners experiencing frequent filament jams or inconsistent extrusion. If you're using your Ender 3 for demanding projects requiring high-quality prints, the upgrade is strongly recommended. It's perfect for users who want to increase the overall reliability of their 3D printer without a major investment. The easy installation makes it an excellent choice for beginners and experienced users alike.

The upgrade is particularly beneficial for those working with flexible filaments or materials prone to causing extrusion problems. Upgrading to this metal extruder can help alleviate the frustration associated with frequent print failures caused by these problematic materials.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

  • Q: Is this extruder compatible with my Creality Ender 3 Pro? A: Yes, it is designed to be compatible with the Ender 3 Pro, as well as other models in the Ender 3 series and CR-10 series.
  • Q: What type of filament does it work with? A: It's designed for 1.75mm filament and works with PLA, ABS, PETG, and other common materials.
  • Q: Is it difficult to install? A: The installation process is relatively straightforward and should be manageable for most users. However, always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Q: How does this compare to other extruder upgrades? A: Compared to more expensive, fully featured extruders, this upgrade offers a great balance of performance and affordability. the stock plastic arm on my ender 3 cracked after only 2 weeks so i had to get this. Way better build quality and it hasn't slipped once. super easy to install too.

If you still have the stock plastic extruder, just buy this now before yours breaks. It’s not a matter of if, but when. This metal kit feels solid and the spring tension is much stronger. My underextrusion issues are completely gone. Took me about 15 minutes to swap out and I didn't even have to recalibrate my e-steps that much, though you probably should check yours anyway.

It's fine. The spring is a bit too stiff compared to the original which caused some flattening of my filament, so I had to swap the old spring back in to get it right. It works though.

Upgraded my V2 after the plastic housing finally snapped mid-print. This kit feels solid and the red finish looks cool on the machine. One thing though, make sure you recalibrate your e-steps after installing! Mine was slightly off. For the price, you can't really complain, its a huge step up from the cheap garbage Creality ships these printers with.

Not impressed tbh. The gear started grinding my PLA into dust after only two weeks. I followed the instructions but the tension just feels off no matter what I do. Might just go for a dual gear setup instead.

Its a decent upgrade for beginners but don't expect miracles. It fixes the 'cracked arm' problem but it's still a single gear extruder. If you are printing TPU you are still gonna have a bad time. The machining on the drive gear was a little rough on mine so I had to sand it down a bit so it wouldnt chew the filament. It's okay for the price point but maybe save up for a BMG clone if u want real performance.
