Elixir 16052 Phosphor Bronze Nanoweb Coating Acoustic Guitar Strings Review: Light, 12-53 (2 Pack)

The Elixir 16052 Phosphor Bronze Nanoweb Coating Acoustic Guitar Strings are designed to provide acoustic guitar players with a long-lasting, bright, and balanced tone. This 2-pack offers convenience and value, ensuring you have a spare set on hand when you need it. These light gauge strings (12-53) are a popular choice for their comfortable playability and suitability for a wide range of playing styles, from fingerpicking to strumming. They are particularly appreciated for their extended lifespan compared to uncoated strings, making them a favorite among gigging musicians and players who want to minimize string changes.

Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting your acoustic guitar journey, these Elixir strings aim to deliver consistent performance and reduced string noise. The Nanoweb coating is a key feature, acting as a barrier against dirt, grime, and sweat, all of which can shorten the life of traditional strings and diminish their tonal quality. They offer excellent intonation and response, making them a worthwhile investment for any serious acoustic guitarist.

Key Features

Here are the key features that make the Elixir 16052 Phosphor Bronze Nanoweb strings stand out:

  • Nanoweb Coating: Elixir's ultra-thin Nanoweb coating protects the entire string, extending its lifespan and preserving its tone.
  • Phosphor Bronze Wrap Wire: This material delivers a bright, balanced acoustic tone with excellent projection and sustain.
  • Light Gauge (12-53): Ideal for comfortable playability and suitable for a variety of acoustic guitar styles.
  • 2-Pack Value: Provides two sets of strings, offering convenience and cost-effectiveness.
  • Anti-Rust Plating on Plain Steel Strings: Resists tone-deadening corrosion, ensuring longer life for the whole set.

Pros

  • Extended String Life: The Nanoweb coating significantly prolongs the life of the strings, reducing the frequency of string changes and saving you money in the long run. This is a major selling point for many guitarists.
  • Consistent Tone: Elixir strings maintain their bright and balanced tone for a remarkably long time compared to uncoated strings, providing a more consistent playing experience.
  • Reduced Finger Noise: The smooth Nanoweb coating minimizes finger squeak and string noise, resulting in cleaner recordings and more pleasant playing sessions. This is great for both practice and performance.
  • Excellent Intonation: These strings provide accurate intonation across the fretboard, ensuring that your guitar plays in tune.
  • Convenient 2-Pack: Having a spare set readily available is always a plus, especially for gigging musicians or those who travel with their guitars.

Cons

  • Higher Price Point: Elixir strings are more expensive than many uncoated alternatives. While the extended lifespan often justifies the cost, the initial investment can be a barrier for some players.
  • Coating Feel: Some players may not like the feel of the Nanoweb coating, finding it slightly slick or unnatural compared to uncoated strings. It takes some getting used to.

Who Should Buy

The Elixir 16052 Phosphor Bronze Nanoweb strings are ideal for several types of guitar players:

  • Gigging Musicians: The extended string life and consistent tone make these strings a reliable choice for musicians who perform regularly and need strings that can withstand frequent use.
  • Recording Artists: The reduced finger noise and consistent tone are beneficial for recording, ensuring clean and professional-sounding tracks. The strings help to capture the natural warmth and clarity of the guitar.
  • Players Seeking Low Maintenance: If you dislike changing strings frequently, Elixir strings are a great option. Their longevity minimizes the hassle of string changes, freeing up more time for playing. If you lead a busy life and don't have time for constant maintenance, these are for you!
  • Intermediate to Advanced Players: While beginners can certainly use these strings, the higher price point may be more justified for players who appreciate the nuances of tone and the benefits of extended string life.

Alternatives and Comparisons

When choosing acoustic guitar strings, alternatives include D'Addario EJ16 Phosphor Bronze Light, Martin MSP4100 SP Phosphor Bronze Light, and Ernie Ball Earthwood Light Acoustic Strings. D'Addario and Martin strings are popular choices known for their balanced tone and affordable price. Ernie Ball strings are praised for their warm, mellow sound. However, none offer the same level of extended string life as Elixir's Nanoweb coated strings. While the upfront cost might be higher for Elixir, the longevity often makes them a cost-effective choice in the long run. If you are deciding between brands, it is important to consider how frequently you typically change your strings, and factor that into the total cost of ownership.

FAQ Section

Q: How long do Elixir strings last?

A: Elixir strings typically last 3-5 times longer than uncoated strings, depending on playing habits and environmental conditions.

Q: Are Elixir strings worth the extra cost?

A: For many players, the extended string life and consistent tone justify the higher price point. If you value low maintenance and consistent performance, they are definitely worth considering.

Q: Do Elixir strings sound different from uncoated strings?

A: While some players perceive a slight difference in initial brightness compared to uncoated strings, the tone remains consistent for a much longer period.

Conclusion

The Elixir 16052 Phosphor Bronze Nanoweb Coating Acoustic Guitar Strings offer exceptional value for players seeking long-lasting tone and reduced maintenance. While the initial cost is higher, the extended lifespan and consistent performance make them a worthwhile investment for serious acoustic guitarists. They're okay. A bit smaller than I thought they'd be though.

I’m kinda torn on these. On one hand, they look great and the finish is pretty convincing from a few feet away. But the edges are a bit sharp? I scratched my finger a little bit when I first opened the door after putting them on. If you're careful it’s probably fine, but just be aware. Shipping was fast though so thats a plus.
