Games Workshop Kill Team: Ork Kommandos Review: A Detailed Look at this Miniature War Game

Introduction

Games Workshop's Kill Team: Ork Kommandos is a tabletop wargame focusing on fast-paced, tactical skirmishes. Unlike larger Warhammer 40,000 games, Kill Team emphasizes smaller squads and streamlined rules, making it accessible to both new and experienced miniature wargamers. This set provides everything needed to field a squad of Ork Kommandos, a brutal and cunning elite unit known for their ambushes and explosive tactics. The game is designed for players who enjoy strategic depth within a more manageable game length compared to larger scale battles.

The core gameplay involves deploying your Ork Kommandos on a battlefield, utilizing terrain to your advantage, and engaging the enemy in close-quarters combat. The game encourages tactical planning, quick thinking, and skillful dice rolling, making each match a unique experience. It's perfect for those seeking a more concentrated and less time-consuming wargaming experience than other Games Workshop titles. It's also an excellent entry point into the wider Warhammer 40,000 universe.

Key Features

  • Pre-assembled Ork Kommandos miniatures: The set includes several finely detailed, pre-assembled Ork Kommandos miniatures, ready to paint and play. No assembly is required, making it ideal for beginners.
  • Detailed terrain pieces: Several pieces of modular terrain are included for creating diverse and interesting battlefields, enhancing the tactical depth of the game.
  • Kill Team rulebook excerpt: A comprehensive rulebook excerpt explains the core rules and specific Ork Kommandos unit rules, making getting started simple.
  • Dice and other gaming accessories: The set contains essential accessories like dice, measuring tools, and other game components.
  • High-quality miniatures: Games Workshop's reputation for high-quality miniatures is evident here, with intricately sculpted Ork Kommandos miniatures.

Pros

  • Ease of setup: The pre-assembled miniatures and straightforward rules make it exceptionally easy to get started, significantly reducing setup time compared to other miniature wargames.
  • Fast-paced gameplay: Kill Team matches are much shorter than full Warhammer 40,000 games, perfect for players with limited time or those who prefer quicker, more focused engagements.
  • High-quality miniatures: The quality of the Ork Kommandos miniatures is excellent, even in their pre-assembled state. The detail is impressive, and they are ready for painting straight out of the box.

Cons

  • Limited unit variety: Compared to the expansive options in full Warhammer 40,000, the unit choices within a Kill Team are more limited, which could feel restrictive for some experienced players.
  • Price point: At $69, the entry cost can be considered high for some, especially for those new to the hobby and unsure of long-term commitment.

Who Should Buy

This set is ideally suited for several types of players. Beginner wargamers will appreciate the ease of setup and streamlined rules. Experienced wargamers might enjoy a faster-paced alternative to larger-scale games. Those with limited time or smaller gaming spaces will also find the compact nature of Kill Team a significant advantage.

The streamlined nature of the game also makes it suitable for players who appreciate strategic depth without the complexities of more expansive wargaming systems. The pre-assembled miniatures are also a significant plus, removing the potentially daunting initial hurdle of model assembly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Q: Do I need to buy additional products to play? A: This set is designed to be a standalone experience, but additional Kill Team rules, units, and terrain can enhance gameplay.
  • Q: What is the average game length? A: Kill Team games typically last between 1-2 hours, significantly shorter than full-scale Warhammer 40,000 games.

Competitor Comparison

Games Workshop's Kill Team: Ork Kommandos competes directly with other miniature wargames in the same category, such as smaller-scale skirmish games from various manufacturers. While many offer diverse factions and universes, the pre-assembled models and streamlined rules of Kill Team set it apart for ease of entry.

Conclusion

Games Workshop Kill Team: Ork Kommandos offers a satisfying and accessible miniature wargaming experience. While the price point might be a barrier for some, the pre-assembled miniatures, simplified rules, and fast-paced gameplay make it an excellent choice for new players or those seeking a more manageable alternative to larger wargames. The construction is superior to most laundry bags on the market. Excellent durability for frequent use.

It's a cute concept but the quality is just okay. The "glass" is actually thin plastic and it scratches really easily if you aren't careful during assembly. My 9 year old had fun for an hour but hasn't touched it since it's basically just a lamp now. It's fine for the price I guess but dont expect it to last forever.

Bought this for our emergency kit after a long power outage last winter. It's surprisingly sturdy for the price. The 3-wick setup gives off way more light than a single candle, which is a huge plus. Definitely recommend if you want something functional that doesn't look like ugly camping gear.

It's okay I guess. It fills the tires fast but the hose gets really hot after just one use. I'm worried it might not last more than a year but we'll see, it's fine for the price point tbh.

tbh I wasn't expecting much for the price but i'm pleasantly surprised. My old one was stuck at 200 degrees forever lol. This one reacts pretty fast when i open the lid. It’s not a professional grade piece of equipment or anything but if you just need to know if your grill is hot enough for steaks it does the job. it looks decent too, nice clean face.

Finally a dry shampoo that doesn't make me look like I have grey hair!! The brunette tint is perfect for my roots and the 2-pack is such a good deal compared to buying them single at the drugstore.

Bought this for my 8 and 10 year olds and it’s honestly been a lifesaver this summer. Setup took me and my husband about an hour because we had to find the right trees, but once it’s up, it’s super sturdy. The variety of obstacles keeps them busy way longer than a standard swing set.

This is a solid alternative to some of the more expensive brands like Red Heart or Caron if you want that gradient look. It’s softer than I expected for "budget" yarn. Definitely good for scarves.
