TalkTools Horn Kit Review: Is This Oral Motor Therapy Tool Right for You?

The TalkTools Horn Kit is designed to improve oral motor skills, speech clarity, and tongue and lip placement, as well as reduce drooling. It's a comprehensive set of tools used in oral placement therapy (OPT), a tactile-proprioceptive approach to speech therapy. This kit is intended to provide a structured and progressive method for developing and strengthening the oral musculature necessary for clear speech and proper feeding. By using the horns in a specific sequence, individuals can gradually improve abdominal grading, controlled oral airflow, and overall speech articulation.

This kit is particularly beneficial for individuals with speech delays, articulation disorders, feeding difficulties, or those with neurological conditions affecting oral motor control. It can be used by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in therapy sessions or by parents at home under the guidance of a professional. The TalkTools Horn Kit aims to bridge the gap between foundational oral motor skills and functional speech production.

Key Features of the TalkTools Horn Kit

  • Comprehensive 12-Piece Set: The kit includes twelve different horns, each designed to target specific oral motor skills and strengthen different muscle groups.
  • Graded Resistance: The horns offer varying levels of resistance, allowing for progressive training and gradual skill development.
  • Durable and Safe Materials: Made from medical-grade materials, the horns are designed for safe and repeated use.
  • Targets Multiple Areas: The kit addresses various areas of oral motor function, including lip rounding, tongue elevation, and controlled airflow.
  • Used in Oral Placement Therapy: The horn kit is a core component in Oral Placement Therapy, a technique that combines traditional therapy with muscle strengthening exercise.

Pros of the TalkTools Horn Kit

  • Effective for Improving Speech Clarity: The graded resistance and targeted exercises can significantly improve speech articulation and clarity, especially for those with articulation disorders.
  • Helps Reduce Drooling: By strengthening the muscles responsible for lip closure and swallowing, the kit can help reduce excessive drooling.
  • Promotes Controlled Oral Airflow: The horns help develop and refine controlled oral airflow, which is essential for clear and fluent speech.
  • Versatile Tool for Various Needs: Applicable for a wide range of conditions, from speech delays to feeding difficulties, making it a valuable resource for therapists and parents.
  • Provides Structured Training: The progressive sequence of horns allows for structured training, ensuring gradual skill development and measurable progress.

Cons of the TalkTools Horn Kit

  • Requires Professional Guidance: To ensure proper usage and maximize effectiveness, professional guidance from a speech-language pathologist is highly recommended. Improper use can lead to frustration or even injury.
  • Can Be Expensive: While not outrageously priced, $37.99 can still represent a significant investment, especially when considering the need for professional guidance.

Who Should Buy the TalkTools Horn Kit?

The TalkTools Horn Kit is a valuable tool for a variety of individuals and professionals:

  • Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs): SLPs can use the kit as a core component of their oral placement therapy interventions, providing a structured and effective way to improve their patients' oral motor skills and speech clarity. It's a hands-on approach that can complement traditional therapy techniques.
  • Parents of Children with Speech Delays: Parents, under the guidance of an SLP, can use the kit at home to supplement therapy sessions and help their children develop the necessary oral motor skills for clear speech. It provides a structured way to practice and reinforce what is being learned in therapy.
  • Individuals with Articulation Disorders: Adults and children with articulation disorders can benefit from the kit's targeted exercises, which help strengthen the muscles responsible for precise speech articulation. By improving oral motor control, they can enhance their ability to produce sounds correctly.
  • Individuals with Feeding Difficulties: The kit can also be beneficial for individuals with feeding difficulties related to poor oral motor control. By strengthening the muscles involved in sucking, swallowing, and chewing, the kit can improve feeding skills and reduce the risk of aspiration. For example, people recovering from stroke, TBI or surgery that impacts swallowing can find the device helpful.
It’s important to consider alternatives as well. For example, Ark Therapeutic offers similar oral motor tools, such as the Z-Vibe, which provides tactile stimulation and vibration to improve oral motor skills. While these tools may be cheaper, they may not provide the structured, progressive approach offered by the TalkTools Horn Kit.

Conclusion: A Valuable Tool for Oral Motor Development

The TalkTools Horn Kit is a well-designed and effective tool for improving oral motor skills, speech clarity, and overall oral function. While it's essential to seek guidance from a speech-language pathologist for proper usage, the kit offers a structured and progressive approach to training and strengthening the oral musculature. At $37.99, the TalkTools Horn Kit offers good value for those seeking to improve speech and feeding skills, especially under the guidance of a trained professional.

Expert Verdict: The TalkTools Horn Kit is a valuable resource for improving oral motor skills and speech clarity, but it's crucial to use it under the guidance of a speech-language pathologist to maximize its effectiveness and prevent any potential issues. We highly recommend it as a supplementary tool in comprehensive speech therapy programs.

The kit is fine but the dropper bottles are a bit flimsy. I ended up transferring the solution to better glass containers for safety. It’s decent for small projects but maybe not for everyone.

Mixed feelings on these. On one hand they are much wider than standard steps which is great for my bad knees, and they dont slip around on the concrete. On the other hand, the "storage" part is kinda a let down because it's not very deep. You can fit a few small bottles but not much else. It's fine for what it is but idk if I’d call it a "storage" step, more like a step with a little cubby.
