The Army Painter Warpaints Air Air Primer: Matt Grey - A Comprehensive Review

If you're a wargamer, miniature painter, or model enthusiast, you know the importance of a good primer. A solid primer layer ensures your paint adheres properly, providing a smooth, even base for your artistic endeavors. The Army Painter Warpaints Air Air Primer in Matt Grey promises just that – a professional-grade primer designed specifically for airbrushing. This 18ml bottle of acrylic paint aims to provide a smooth, matte finish, readying your miniatures for a vibrant and detailed paint job.

But does it live up to the hype? In this review, we'll delve into the features, pros, cons, and overall performance of The Army Painter Warpaints Air Air Primer Matt Grey, helping you decide if it's the right choice for your next project.

Key Features

  • Pre-Thinned for Airbrush Use: This primer is specifically formulated and pre-thinned for optimal performance in airbrushes, saving you time and effort in mixing and achieving the perfect consistency.
  • Matt Grey Finish: The matt grey finish provides an excellent neutral base coat, allowing your colors to pop and ensuring accurate color representation.
  • Acrylic-Based Formula: The acrylic formula offers excellent adhesion to a wide range of materials, including plastic, resin, and metal.
  • 18ml Bottle Size: The 18ml bottle is a convenient size for smaller projects and allows you to try out the primer without committing to a larger, more expensive option.
  • Part of the Warpaints Air Range: Compatible with other paints from The Army Painter Warpaints Air range, allowing for easy mixing and consistent results.

Pros

  • Excellent Adhesion: The primer adheres remarkably well to various materials, including plastic, resin, and metal miniatures. Say goodbye to chipping and peeling paint!
  • Smooth, Even Coverage: When applied correctly with an airbrush, this primer provides a beautifully smooth and even coat, minimizing surface imperfections and creating an ideal base for subsequent layers.
  • Fast Drying Time: Compared to some other primers, The Army Painter Warpaints Air Air Primer dries relatively quickly, allowing you to move on to the next stage of your painting project sooner.
  • Perfect Matt Grey Tone: The matt grey is a fantastic neutral tone for priming all types of models and wargaming miniatures. It doesn't heavily influence the paint color like black or white primer might.
  • Easy to Use Airbrush Formula: Since it's pre-thinned, it's ready to go right into your airbrush. This is a major time saver and greatly reduces the chance of clogging issues.

Cons

  • Can Clog Airbrushes if Not Cleaned Properly: Like all airbrush paints, proper cleaning is essential. Failure to thoroughly clean your airbrush after use can lead to clogs and reduced performance.
Requires Airbrush for Optimal Results: While it could* technically be applied with a brush, the pre-thinned nature and overall formula are really designed for airbrush application. Brushing may lead to inconsistent coverage and a less desirable finish.

Who Should Buy The Army Painter Warpaints Air Air Primer?

The Army Painter Warpaints Air Air Primer Matt Grey is ideal for wargamers and miniature painters who value efficiency and a professional finish. If you primarily use an airbrush for priming your miniatures, this product is a fantastic choice. It's especially well-suited for those who paint armies or large batches of miniatures, as the quick drying time and even coverage can significantly speed up the painting process. This primer is also a good option for beginners who are new to airbrushing, as the pre-thinned formula makes it easier to achieve consistent results. It is a good choice for priming plastic miniatures from games like Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar or historical miniatures games.

However, if you don't own an airbrush, or if you prefer to prime your miniatures by hand, this product may not be the best fit. While alternative brush-on primers exist, the Warpaints Air formula is specifically designed for airbrush application. Consider looking at brush-on primers from brands like Vallejo or Citadel, which are formulated for hand application and often offer similar benefits like excellent adhesion and smooth coverage. Ultimately, the choice depends on your preferred painting methods and equipment.

Conclusion

The Army Painter Warpaints Air Air Primer Matt Grey offers excellent value for its price. The pre-thinned formula, smooth coverage, and fast drying time make it a convenient and effective option for miniature painters who use airbrushes. While proper cleaning is crucial to prevent clogs, the overall performance and ease of use outweigh this minor drawback. Compared to similar airbrush primers from brands like Vallejo or Badger, The Army Painter offers a competitive price point and comparable quality, making it a solid choice for both beginners and experienced painters. Its a decent upgrade for beginners but don't expect miracles. It fixes the 'cracked arm' problem but it's still a single gear extruder. If you are printing TPU you are still gonna have a bad time. The machining on the drive gear was a little rough on mine so I had to sand it down a bit so it wouldnt chew the filament. It's okay for the price point but maybe save up for a BMG clone if u want real performance.

Love it!! Fits like a glove on my RZR. No more worrying about sand getting in where it shouldn't.

My wife liked the products but the packaging arrived a bit crushed. The wash is good but the rest of the kit feels a bit standard for the price point.
